ALGBTICAL Becomes ALASOGIIC
The Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Issues in Counseling of Alabama (ALGBTICAL) is currently discussing the possibility of changing its name to the Alabama Association for Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Issues in Counseling (ALASOGIIC). We would be interested in receiving your feedback regarding this name change. Send us an e-mail message.
ALGBTICAL's Official Affiliation
ALGBTICAL is also an official state division of the
Alabama Counseling Association (ALCA). ALCA is an official state
branch of the American Counseling Association (ACA).
ALGBTICAL's Official Name
The national organization guides the nomenclature used to confer official titles on the various state branches. So, typically, the names of the state branches reflect the name of the national association.
Over the next three years, as discussion about the variations of persons under the sexual minority umbrella ensued, the national organization decided to change its name from AGLBIC to ALGBTIC (Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Issues in Counseling).
In 2008, to reflect the name change of the national organization and to express a broader definition of the population served, AGLBICAL changed its title to the Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Issues in Counseling of Alabama... or ALGBTICAL.
The new name intentionally embedded the acronym LGBT into the division's official title.
ALGBTICAL's New Name
As more and more letters began to be added to the four-letter LGBT abbreviation, discussion of another name change came about. Afterall, by some counts, the acronym had grown to 14 letters.
Recently, the ALGBTICAL board members have been discussing the possibility of adopting a more streamlined version of its title. The new label also needed to be inclusive of the population being served and easy to pronounce. Focusing on the more general umbrella terms, rather than the various specific terms under the umbrella, seemed to be the right approach to keeping the title simple.
After many names were considered, the title that seemed to work best was... The Alabama Association for Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Issues in Counseling... or ALASOGIIC.
This new label has been proposed and will be officially submitted for approval at the upcoming ALCA Executive Council meeting. In the meantime, the officers and board members invite feedback and further discussion from all members of the division.
